Talking Money with Your Honey Part II

Money.

How do you feel when you hear that word? How do you feel when you think about having a conversation with your partner about money?

If you feel anxious or like you want to change the subject, please keep reading…

One thing that I’ve come to value through my work with couples is that there is a lot importance in what’s NOT being talked about. Something that I am passionate about helping couples to talk about with more ease is money.

It can be easy to assume that you are on the same page when it comes to money matters & expectations when you rarely, if ever, talk about money with your partner.

I have discovered that so many people (both in and outside of the therapy room) avoid money talk like it’s the plague.

Meanwhile, money impacts us daily in how we engage with the world (and ourselves) to a point that can’t be minimized.

I had a really engaging conversation with my colleague and good friend, Karen Conlon on her podcast, “So, How’s Therapy?”

We were discussing the many layers of unpacking your relationship with money and how your money beliefs and stories manifest in your day-to-day life. Emotions that are tied to past financial experiences can drive how (and why) we spend, save, or manage our money.

These money behaviors and the meanings that we attach to them can carry a lot of emotional charge that can infiltrate our relationships in subtle and not-so-subtle ways.

As money can be such a taboo topic, I’m thrilled that Karen & I could cultivate a money-positive conversation while dropping a lot of A-Ha’s that we have discovered both in our clinical work and our personal lives.

It is my mission to help couples to have a healthier relationship with money while no longer experiencing money as a “scary” topic to bring up.
